THE FLYING TIDINGS WHIRLED was commissioned for the entrance of the MGM Springfield hotel, within a huge redevelopment project including a casino, movie theater and other attractions stretching over several blocks in downtown Springfield, MA which had been destroyed by a tornado some years earlier. The client wanted a sculpture which would evoke the history of the site, without causing trauma to those affected by the tragedy. I named the sculpture after a poem by Springfield native Emily Dickinson.
