MIA PEARLMAN CREATES STUNNING LIMITED EDITION LASER CUT SCULPTURE FOR SLASH: PAPER UNDER THE KNIFE AT THE MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN IN NY - AFFORDABLE AND EASY TO ASSEMBLE

VOLUTA is a limited edition laser cut sculpture by Mia Pearlman, created in conjunction with the exhibition Slash: Paper Under the Knife at the Museum of Arts and Design from October 7, 2009 – April 4, 2010.

In addition to INRUSH, the new site specific cut paper installation she will be creating on the 5th floor, Pearlman produced VOLUTA for the Store at MAD to offer museum visitors an opportunity to create and own a complex, luminous “paper” sculpture, an affordable piece of contemporary art fun for all ages. In just minutes anyone can transform a flat piece of laser cut material into a swirling, three-dimensional vortex.

Made of translucent high impact polystyrene, VOLUTA is meant to hang in a window or near a light source, but can also sit on a pedestal or horizontal surface. Several feet of monofilament is included for hanging.

VOLUTA is Pearlman’s first limited edition sculpture. Known for her large, ephemeral site specific cut paper installations, Pearlman explains, “Normally my work is gigantic, and I wanted to make something that normal people could afford, and that was also of a normal size: you could put it in your house. And I also wanted to give non-artists the opportunity to make sculpture.” (From the video Mia Pearlman: VOLUTA)

VOLUTA is priced at $195. Each VOLUTA is signed and numbered. Edition of 250.

VOLUTA will be sold exclusively through the Store at the Museum of Arts and Design in NY starting October 7th. It will be featured in the front window of the Store, facing Columbus Circle and for sale on the Store’s website.

A large, swirling mobile entitled "VOLUTION," made of 16 VOLUTA, will be displayed in the lobby of the museum.

Pearlman’s new site specific cut paper installation in Slash, entitled INRUSH, will take advantage of the natural light that enters through the window cut on the west side of the building.

On Saturday, October 17th at 2pm, Pearlman will be giving an artist talk and VOLUTA demo in MAD’s auditorium. Attendees will receive a 30% discount on VOLUTA on that day only. This event is open to all museum visitors, but space will be limited.

The prototype of VOLUTA was developed in conjunction with Proyecto'Ace, a residency in Buenos Aires, AR, and Rodrigo de Salvo of DIP Agency in BA. My stay there was funded by the Pollock Krasner Foundation. Special thanks to the Caroline Kim of Rockwell Group.
